Perennial herb with a height of 45 to 150 cm; the diameter of an individual plant can reach 90 cm. The stems are erect, ribbed, relatively soft, simple or branched. Leaves are opposite, simple, lanceolate, with jagged edges, up to 8 cm long. Flowers are zygomorphic, two-lipped, forming dense spike-shaped inflorescences on the tops of the stems. Corollas are dark pink (pink-blue, purple). The flowering time is from June to September.
For food purposes
The plant has a rather strong odor, reminiscent of anise (as well as licorice and fennel), and therefore its leaves are used as a seasoning in cooking to flavor salads (to give them a "refreshing" taste), meat and fish dishes, drinks. In addition, the leaves are used to make herbal tea (this drink was also prepared by the Indians in the homeland of the plant). The leaves are used both fresh and dried.
In medicine
In folk medicine, the plant is used to treat colds, as well as in inflammatory processes of the gastrointestinal tract and urinary system. As an external remedy, fennel multicolor is used as an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent, including in the treatment of cicatricial alopecia, fungal dermatitis, and seborrhea. In addition, the plant is used to strengthen hair and stimulate hair growth.
In scientific medicine, the plant is not used, but it is potentially a raw material for the production of many medicines: phytochemical studies have shown that the herb of fennel beetle contains a complex of biologically active substances with antioxidant, antimicrobial, antimycotic and pilotropic effects.
In beekeeping
The plant is a valuable honey plant. The plant gives bribes from the beginning of flowering (May - June) until the onset of cold weather. The productivity of nectar in conditionally clean plantations is from 90 to 180 kg / ha - depending on the fertility of the soil. When creating a continuous nectar-bearing conveyor, it is advisable to combine crops with blue cyanosis crops. However, they bloom continuously for about 120 days.
In gardening
In Europe, the fennel multicolor is cultivated mainly for decorative purposes for the sake of beautiful inflorescences. In particular, the plant is used in border plantings.
