Ageratum (lat. Ageratum) is a genus of plants of the Asteraceae family.
The Latin name comes from the Greek. ageratos is ageless, as the plant retains its fresh appearance for a long time.
Botanical description
Herbaceous or semi-shrub plant. Stems are numerous, highly branched, erect or ascending, pubescent, 10-50 cm tall.
Leaves are triangular, rhombic or oval, serrated along the edge, rough; the lower and middle ones are opposite, petiolate, the upper ones are alternate, almost sessile.
The flowers are small, narrow tubular, bisexual, fragrant, collected in small inflorescences-baskets 1-1.5 cm in diameter. Collected in complex corymbose inflorescences up to 10 cm in diameter. The decorativeness of the inflorescences is given by the two-lobed stigmas of flowers, which are almost twice the length of the perianth and are strongly protruding above it.
It blooms very profusely from June to the first frost. Fruiting in early September.
In low-growing varieties, flower stalks, as a rule, form several tiers, and in medium-tall varieties, they are all located at the same level, therefore, the plants planted in a group form a continuous floral carpet.
Ageratum is drought-resistant and photophilous.
